CREATING A TIME CAPSULE

Based on what was discussed in our last class, you are going to create a "time capsule", not to be opened before the year 2250, to help future generations understand life as the beginning of the 21st century. Bear in mind the features presented in your book, on page 93. Write your list below this post (comment), including 15 items.

      4. A butterfly.

      7. A board game like cards, dominoes, or checkers.
      8. A natural juice of any kind of fruit.
      9. A Condorito or Mafalda Magazine.
      10. A history book
      11. Photos of some public personalities like Barack Obama, Madonna, Lady Gaga etc.
      12. Sunglasses

    3. Well, in my opinion a pair of tennis shoes are not a proper thing to put in the time capsule, because I think everybody will wear them in the future.Tennis will be more comfortable, adaptable and maybe will have intelligent functions. An iron is not as important as many other devices to put in the capsule too. Also, I think that photos of public personalities will not be relevant, and people in the future possibly won't unterstand why they were such important, if there are only pictures.

    4. I think that a butterfly shouldn't been include in the time capsule because It is an animal that has existed for many years and maybe in the future there will be more species. I also consider that the photos of some public personalities and the history book are things that will be found on internet and in other different sources.

    5. From my point of view I wouldn´t take a pair of shoes, because we have seen that clothes haven´t changed that much during the history, it is just the style what changes. So, from my opinion in the future we will wear shoes but just a different style, unless we go back to the time where there were not shoes at all.

    6. I won't put a history book, because in the future people problably won't read books and they will find everything on internet so if they want to know somenthing about history or any other topic they only have to go to the web and get what they want.

    7. I desagree with the idea of putting that kind of comic magazines because they are really old and they do not represent our generation. I think that putting a history book would be a waste of space beacuse in the future they probably will have museums or the way to access to that kind of historical information would be easier and faster.

    8. I think that in the future people could find all the information they'll want due to advances in technology so things like a history book or photos of some public personalities are not so important for a time capsule. These kind of things will be on internet or in other database.

    9. I really find it interesting to put a butterfly in a time capsule, because they are animals that die easily when their natural habitats are destroyed. One example of natural habitats destroyed are the constructions of new houses and luxurious buildings in natural zones.

    10. i think it wouldn´t be a good idea to keep meals in a time capsule because food rots over time and is useless and just imagine how it would be in 50 years.

    3. I think that an USB full of anime cartoons is not as representative as for instance, Chespirito's programmes or national T.V programmes. In fact, an USB interface perhaps wouldn't be available at the time the capsule will be opened.

    4. About what Juan p, Laura and Sergio said, I disagree to put that kind of magazines in the time capsule, because it doesn't give a good impression about our culture, also it doesn't reflect the reality itself, it just showed some part of it but not the most important or good-looking. It would have been better to put books or newspapers in the time capsule.

    5. In my opinion a USB with all the collection of dragon ball and sailor moon will be found on internet, for example right now if you want to show to the new generation this programs, you simply search it online and that's what will happen in the future. the same will happen with the short story of the world. I also think that a teddy bear will exist and maybe there will be more variety of this stuffed animals.

    6. About what juan pablo's group mentioned,I think is not a good idea to put a Soho magazine in the time capsule because it dooesn't provide important things to the society and it doesn't show a good image of our culture. I also think that a coke, which has existed since 1886, will disappear, because the company that produces it has used different strategies to survive in the global market and they will find the way to continue selling this drink.

I agree with the rest of the items, especially with the familiar picture, it is important for our future generation in order to know their ancestors.

    1. In my opinion, I do agree with putting an Ipod with all the greates hits of our era, that will make a distinction between us and the future generations. Also, padlocks will definitely disappear because of the future safety technology we are due to see, so it's woth to be put in the capsule. Perhaps I don't think that kind of food should be inside, it's better to put other nourishment, for example fruit that possibly will be difficult to get in the future.

    2. I disagree with the ideao of putting empanadas, because that kind of food does not represent just our culture, because you can find empanadas not only in Colombia and south america, you can find them even in Greece where they are called pita and in Rusia (pirozhki). Taking into account the other items I do agree with them.

    3. The laptop is a good idea, but then I think the laptop could replace the tv in function, I mean, if you take the tv it doesn't mean you are taking the programs with you, you just take the element. So, if you have the laptop you will be able to find the programs on internet so you could watch them. Nowadays, you can find almost every episody of a tv program, then , there is not deal taking a tv.

    4. I desagree with the Ripped jeans, first i don't see the point in put them in the time capsule a normal jeans would be the same and second maybe in the future people still have this kind of jeans so they are not something that people will find interesting in the future.

    5. I desagree with the idea of putting comics like Mafalda and Calvin & Hobbes because they really do not represent our generation. Mafalda dates from 1964 and Calvin and Hobbes from the 80's. So, it would be better for them to think about other types of comics or cartoons. I would probably put comics from DC comics or some DVD's of the Cartoon- Cartoons Show from Cartoon Network, Pinky and Brain, Animaniacs etc. Lots of cartoons that really represented our generation.

    1. I disagree with putting classic jeans in the capsule because trends are repeated, and at certain time in the future there will be people wearing things similar to what we wear today. I also thinK that a tamal and a glass of masato are typical food that will be passed on from generation to generation.

    2. In My opinion I wouldn't take two of your things, first, I disagree taking the high heels, as I said before, clothes won't change that much, just the style, we can see that today, for example the clothes we are wearing right now is the style of some years ago, then time goes by and we change our clothes for the same style of another time in past , it's like a cycle that we repeat. Second I wouldn't take the dictionaries, since nowadays you can find the meaning of any word on internet.
      Laura Bahamon

    3. I wouldn't put the prostheses because in the future they would probably put those thing in a museum where you can find them, adding historical information about them. I'd think about more personal items that will be really difficult to find.

      Sergio Andres Mendoza

    4. I would leave a pair of high heels, because in the future they won´t change much, maybe in their desing(color, figures) in their high, but the will continue being heels.neither a different kind of prosthesis because.. well i don´t understand why you choose them, but in the future there will be better thing for people to use in case they need a prosthesis.

    5. Laura, clothes haven't changed much in the last decades, that's true, but remember this capsule is to be opened in the year 2250, that's more than 2 centuries from now!!!

And to most of you who have mentioned the Internet, how can you assume it will still exist then? It is less than 45 years old! And it was commercialised only until the 90's!

      Delete
    6. This list is very interesting I agree with most things but the only one that in my opinion is not important "a pair of high heels like Lady gaga is used to wear" because the fashion is something that comes and goes all the time and there are other things that can be more revelant.

    7. Well I don't think that putting classic jeans is a good idea. As the word ''classic'' itself means a model that is worthy of emulation. We always need a model to imitate and to create superior things, in this case, superior jeans. That's why I say that they will certainly continue to exist.

    1. Is something unusual but I agree with Алекса Ђилас from Serbia about the idea of putting the smell of the fresh air in an airtight bottle, because pollution in the future is going to be something frightening. It would be nice to show our future generations the air we breathe in our years of life.

  8. My opinion about foreigners proposal: In general, I could notice that all of them will put some personal thins in the time capsule, such as diaries, family pictures, personal collections etc, perhaps very valuable for themselves. It might be sign of preserving identity or maybe to be noticed in the future. Some people will put very traditional things, such as literature books, another will definitely think about putting things that certainly will change disappear from the planet such as fresh air or petrol. However I consider that their thoughts are similar to us because, we both proposed to preserve something authentic of each culture or individually, to be shown to the future generations in this time capsule.

  9. Juan Pablo, Sergio and Laura´s group has very useful items I agree with my classmates, because those items are meaningful to anyone in our daily life; except with the Chorramo, Gansito and Doritos instead of those you can put a typical plate in order to let our future generations know about the flavor of typical Colombian Food.

I disagree with the CD´s and DVD´s these items will disappear in some years also you have many technological items so the information inside the CD´s and DVD´s could be set into the laptop. An interesting item that I find useful is the money (bills and coins) to show them the currency in the 21st century, because the money especially bills represent many well-known people and have remarkable designs like the bill of $ 5.000 (pesos).

They have many curious items like the tamal and the glass of masato I think it’s convenient because it´s a typical food from Colombia. Also they took into account items to do the housework it is convenient to let them know about the way we do the housework these tools would quickly disappeared. Finally the most useful could be the dictionary because we don´t know if in the future the meaning, the spelling and pronunciation of the words could change for this reason the dictionary will involve them into their mother tongue in order to be familiar with the language.

  12. For the participation of the people around the world I found really interesting the value that the money has, especially the bills, so we all definitely agree about setting one of them inside the time capsule and because it will disappeared in few years.
It is sweet of Sebastian Henrich to put his bedcover when he was a kid into the time capsule. So these things have much sentimental value and it could be also important because of the material, size and design.
The most amazing I found was the smell of the fresh air (airtight bottle) it would be an excellent idea because we all know about the atmospheric pollution.

  13. About what the foreigners mentioned,I noticed that they prefered to put personal items rather than general things that provide interesting information about this era. I find strange the fact of putting a bottle with fresh air. It could be difficult to do it but at the same time it is interesting because the enviroment won't be the same in the future and it will be useful that other people know how it was in the past.
I think that it is worth to put what steve said: A BIG list with Stuff I want, dreams I have, places I wanna go to, etc, because it will show the thoughts of people of our generation.
I consider that is creepy what Bjørn mentioned: "A picture of myself in my ashes after I’m dead" it is not useful and necessary.

    1. Well, about the foreigners opinions, I noticed that they thought a lot about their really personal things. I guess this was in order to be remembered or noticed in the future and those things would have a more personal significance in the future for the people who find the capsule.

  14. i agreed with maria alejandra and lina they have chosen many personal things to put inside the Time Capsule, i thinks that is a good idea because people in the future will know what kind of things were important for us.
the old cellphone is a great idea too because people will realize how the first phone was: how big, the functions and so on and so forth.
the ashes are kid of weird peiple in the future won't be sure waht they are or what to do with them but it's an original idea.
In general I like most of the things.

  15. The most of foreigners chose personal items and I respect that, but personally I think that it would be more interesting and important to find things from a whole culture or generation, and not only from one particular person.
Also, the most interesting thing I found in that list was the bottle of petrol, because even nowadays this fuel is desappearing.

  16. Reading about What other people around the world suggested I think that they put things that according to their culture are representative but it was more fun read what my classmates wrote, I think that those are the things that make us authentic and that represent our culture, I agree with all the things that they decided to put in this box all were good ideas.

  17. I do not really agree with the idea of putting a padlock inside the capsule time because I believe they do not represent us is something quite well spred over the world and were are not the ones that inveted it. Maybe you could say the same about some things we mentioned in our list but I cannot really find how can a padlock represent our way of thinking, I`m not saying it wouldn't be nice to have a two hundred year old padlock but how can it represent to our grandchildren waht we were...
